A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Bisi Yusuff, on Friday urged Nigerians to be patient with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in spite of the current challenges facing the country.
Yusuff, the Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts (Local), spoke at a media chat with journalists in Ikeja.
He said: “There is no alternative to the challenges currently faced by Nigerians; the citizens have to endure. The nation will overcome the challenges with the foundation being built by Buhari.
Buhari is capable and Nigerians will soon appreciate efforts being made to provide lasting solutions to many of our challenges.
I know things are very hard, economy is bad, things are biting, but we just have to be patient because building processes always take time.”
According to him, it is better for the President to be slow than be hasty and plunge the nation into crisis.
The lawmaker said that the previous Peoples Democratic Party-led administrations in the country failed to tackle the problems of security, infrastructure, corruption and those facing the economy.
Yusuff, a two-term Executive Secretary and Chairman, Ipaja-Ayobo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) expressed confidence that the country would come out of her challenges.
The lawmaker, who commended Buhari for his efforts to diversify the nation’s economy, called for reduction in the price of agriculture inputs and implements to attract people into the sector.
He also urged the Federal Government to restructure the country to reflect true and fiscal federalism.
Yusuff commended the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, for his strides in the areas of healthcare, roads infrastructure and employment, among others in the state.
On the local government administration, the lawmaker urged council administrators to look inward and increase their Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR) drive.
All the council administrators need to generate ideas, look inward, work on IGR, but many of them wait for federal allocation. They need to think less of federal allocation.
The way out is aggressive IGR and blockage of loopholes. Once this is done, enough money will be there to do their job and provide necessary infrastructure at the grassroots,” he said.
The lawmaker urged Nigerians to patronise and appreciate locally made products and services for the development of the nation’s economy. (NAN)
